I was glad I planned to arrive in La Veta early and took the time to drive the Highway of Legends. Amazing as the geologic forms and views are, I was especially pleased to find Canadian thistles. They are one of the loveliest of purple flowers, in my opinion, though memories of summers spent chopping them out of the pasture, while nostalgic, aren’t necessarily fond.
With all the curves and switchbacks on this route, I was a little leery of hopping out of the car for extensive photo ops so settled for quick pics which included higher than normal shutter speed to try to compensate for hand-holding on a windy day. Good news: these particular thistles were towering over some other magenta and purple wildflowers so I was able to frame to create some added purple-ish bokeh for the background.

on August 2, 2019The backlighting is phenomenal! Interesting, isn’t it, how something so wicked to touch can, at the same time, be so beautiful.
